Wishing John Standring a Wonderful Retirement
04/08/2025
After an incredible 51 years in the building services industry, we’re saying a fond farewell to John Standring as he begins a well-earned retirement.
John’s career began in August 1974 at S.B. Booth & Co., a small company specialising in dust extraction. From there, he moved on to Hall & Kay Ltd, a major firm based in Ashton-under-Lyne, before going on to deliver projects both in the UK and overseas.
John joined BES in 2008 as a Building Services Co-Ordinator, bringing a wealth of knowledge and experience to the team. John played an important key role in the delivery of a wide range of schemes, from smaller refurbishment and fit-out projects through to complex capital builds for companies such as AstraZeneca, GSK and BPL.
Reflecting on his time at BES, John describes it as a milestone in the rapid progress of the company. “I was lucky,” he says. “I worked with some very gifted people and got on with them well.” He’ll miss the team spirit and camaraderie, as well as the legendary BES Christmas parties and getting up to have a boogie.
John heads into retirement with his trademark wit and charm, a big book of funny stories, and a few plans to keep him busy. Top of the list is tackling the GM Ringway, a 200-mile circular walk around Greater Manchester (though not all in one go!). He’s also hoping to finally perfect his guitar playing, so he can enjoy sunny days in the garden without upsetting the neighbours.
As he closes this chapter, John offers a heartfelt message:
“I’d like to wish all at BES the very best for the future and to say thanks for all the very fond memories and for keeping me off the streets for so long.”
From all of us at BES, thank you, John. It’s been a pleasure working with you, and we wish you all the very best for a happy and well-deserved retirement.
