The project combined production and assembly in one new single plant and is part of a £50 million investment at the Glasgow HQ and manufacturing site of the UK subsidiary of Tokyo’s Terumo Corporation.
BES faced the task of designing and constructing two advanced cleanrooms and a sterilization suite for Terumo Aortic, integrating new production equipment to support an expanding global market. The project required innovative solutions to meet net zero targets, utilising 100% recyclable electricity and air source heat pumps. Additionally, the design had to incorporate Norwood demountable partitioning systems for flexibility and sustainability, all while managing rising material costs and pandemic-related challenges.
BES successfully completed phase one by leveraging their full architectural, M&E, and process services expertise. They collaborated closely with Terumo Aortic to ensure the facility met cGMP standards and incorporated bespoke process equipment. The use of prefabricated, adaptable Norwood partitioning systems allowed for efficient integration of power, data, and utilities. By focusing on sustainable technologies and innovative design iterations, BES delivered a future-ready facility that aligns with Terumo’s environmental goals and operational needs.
It’s been a long process to get to this stage, not least working through the pandemic and at a time of rising costs; prices for fuel, aluminium and many integral materials went through the roof, which resulted in several re-iterations of the design to control costs. However, it’s been a strong relationship with BES’s dedicated engineering team working well together to develop innovative solutions.
