A practical approach to Kardex integration
Our new client is a world leading biopharmaceutical group committed to developing and producing medications used in oncology, endocrinology and neuromuscular disorders. Their UK’s biologics centre of excellence, dedicated to the manufacturing and global supply of one of their key products, had a requirement to develop a solution for a bespoke cold room around three automated vertical storage units located in the existing packing and storage facility.
Recognised for our innovative approach and practical experience in designing solutions for the integration of Kardex units within the facilities we build, BES were commissioned to undertake a front end design study with particular focus on developing a reliable temperature controlled environment.
This study produced a consolidated design for the Kardex units situated within independent fire compartments. BES mechanical designers developed a tailored HVAC solution to facilitate the storage units’ height, creating the environment that would maintain the temperature range 2-8 C at all time. The solution was validated through repeated CFD models for different scenarios, running steady-state and transient simulations. This effectively confirmed that the proposed design would guarantee the required temperature during uploading and loading.
We also carried out a comprehensive study to demonstrate what fire protection would be the most effective and compliant with FM Global standards.
Our multidisciplinary team was led by a dedicated Design Lead who has built a strong relationship with the client, ensuring that all disciplines and elements of the project were effectively co-ordinated.
Following a successful Concept Design Study, we were engaged to provide further support, developing the design up to RIBA stage 4. We are looking forward to continue working with this high-profile client; utilising our key strengths including design expertise, commercial management, speed of delivery and cutting-edge construction methods, to provide full turnkey project delivery.
