Depending on the specific class or application of the cleanroom, up to 60 per cent of the facility’s energy consumption is usually accounted for by its HVAC system. Ostensibly, this is unavoidable because of the need to maintain a controlled environment through heating, cooling, humidity control, air changes and pressure regimes. However, innovative design approaches and bespoke specification of HVAC systems to meet the specific needs of the end user can reduce energy demand of HVAC systems by as much as 50 per cent by avoiding common assumptions and over-specification...READ MORE
BES recently completed a multidisciplinary design of the new primary packing facility, including full integration of a state-of-the-art sterile syringe filling line, for AstraZeneca in Macclesfield. The project comprised the fit-out of an existing fallow area within the live cancer drug manufacturing plant – a facility BES designed and constructed in 2016. By bringing production and packing capabilities under one roof, AstraZeneca will further streamline the distribution of their highly sensitive and valuable product, increasing its overall capacity...READ MORE
We are thrilled to announce the promotion of Mike Stigberg to our new Principal Engineer. Mike joined the company seven years ago and has advanced through progressively more responsible positions within our design department, where he has played a key role in delivering projects to clients such as GSK, AstraZeneca Cambridge, Bespak and Bio Products Limited. We carried out a brief interview with Mike to learn more about his new role and his biggest passion outside working at BES. ...READ MORE
With the introduction of a new ISO 14644-16 standard, it’s become even more important to ensure that the performance of your cleanroom has been fully optimised to reduce its energy consumption. The ISO document, published in June 2019, recognises that the energy usage of controlled environments is significantly higher than other commercial buildings of similar size. A considerable amount of energy is usually used by a cleanroom’s HVAC system, due to the high fan power required to achieve specific cleanrooms’ standards... READ MORE
Gavin Statham, Regional Director at BES, a specialist in the design and construction of cleanrooms, aseptic facilities and other sophisticated environments, discusses the demanding requirements for hospital aseptic facilities and how the healthcare sector can benefit from the experience of the pharmaceutical industry. High-specification, specialist facilities for the preparation of aseptically-prepared drugs need to provide a sterile environment that safeguards the purity and accuracy of the formulation. Such facilities are frequently built into pharmaceutical manufacturing environments where GMP (Good Manufacturing Practice) guidelines ensure compliance to recognised standards. READ MORE...
At BES, we’re used to mission-critical project timelines. With so many of our projects in the pharmaceutical and healthcare sectors providing the specialist assets that form part of a wider strategy, every project is delivered to a critical path that makes sure we achieve the client’s objectives. During the COVID-19 pandemic, answering our clients’ requirements is more important than ever. We are supply chain partners for NHS Trusts who are on the frontline of caring for patients and preparing for increased demand on services. We’re also a key element in the pharmaceuticals delivery chain that will provide medical equipment and medicines during this challenging time, and are working with biotech organisations that are investing their expertise and resources to develop a vaccine. For all of us, these days of social distancing and self-isolation due to the COVID-19 pandemic are tough. Not only are we dealing with the commercial challenges of maintaining business continuity at a time when change is constant; we’re also trying to come to terms with a new definition of ‘normal’ across all aspects of life. We’re fortunate here at BES that the technology and agile working practices already embedded in the business are enabling us to work from home and continue collaborating with clients. The platforms we use to design and engineer specialist facilities are enabling our inter-disciplinary team to work together and share documents as normal to progress projects at design phase. These are exciting times in the life science sector. Advances in biotechnology mean it’s now possible to create bespoke treatments for an array of life-threatening conditions, providing tailored and rapid-action therapies that often combine faster and improved outcomes with less invasive treatment. This shift in science, from chemical formulations to cell and gene therapies using advanced biotech processes, is calling for a new generation of innovative cleanroom, laboratory and aseptic facilities. These facilities will enable scalable, commercial production of advanced preparations. READ MORE...
“We have a great culture”, “we’re inclusive”, “we’re collaborative” – it seems that everyone is keen to promote a positive business culture as an indicator of their company’s success. The Oxford dictionary defines culture as “the ideas, customs, and social behaviour of a particular people or society”. Quite simply then, from a business perspective, culture starts with the people within a company and the behaviours they adopt. READ MORE...
Since the company was founded in 2002, we have designed and built many cleanrooms and laboratories, particularly for the pharmaceutical, medical devices and biotech markets. During this time, we have established a strong customer base including blue chip customers such as AstraZeneca, GSK and Smith & Nephew who require sophisticated facilities for the discovery, development and manufacture of drugs. However, cleanrooms and controlled environments are used in practically every industry including automation, aeronautical, healthcare and semiconductor and these industries are providing further opportunities to utilise our design expertise and construction experience to full effect....READ MORE
