Following the successful delivery of a new R&D facility for the world leader in addiction treatment, BES were awarded a £500,000 commission to design a new oral solid dose manufacturing facility, located on the same site. Following an initial feasibility study to establish the project requirements, our Front End design team worked closely with the client from project inception to develop the design up to RIBA Stage 3.
Our new client, specialising in development of new applications for patch technology, engaged BES to undertake a front end study to understand the feasibility of locating a new IMP pilot manufacturing plant within their existing building. Our feasibility study demonstrated that the existing building could be re-modelled to form a new clinical trials facility.
Following completion of the structural slab and steelwork installations, the site is now prepared to commence the internal fit out activities, with Norwood leading the way with the innovative, highly specified, pre-fabricated partitioning system. The facility will occupy a total floor area in excess of 7,500m2 and comprises individual Primary Packing rooms with large, common secondary Packing areas. To meet the specific requirements of this qualified facility, bespoke solutions have been designed and developed.
To conclude the ‘Meet Our Design Team’ campaign, we would like to present an interview with our BIM Manager, Mike Robinson. Mike is the focal point of development, implementation and monitoring of the use of BIM at BES. His primary responsibility is to manage and coordinate BIM standards on all related projects, files and models. He works closely with the Design Director and Principal Architect to help guide the implementation of BIM improvement strategy across the company and provides training to new staff, as well as updates our existing employees on the latest BIM protocols and procedures. In his interview, Mike explains what he finds exciting about his role and what aspect of his work is the most challenging at the moment.

Works are progressing well on the construction of the new 7,500m2 packing hall at our Macclesfield site. Following the demolition of existing warehouse racking, and removal of the existing slab, we have installed new foundations and slab to enable the construction of the mezzanine steel framed plant deck. The mezzanine floor slab has been poured in readiness for the delivery of Air Handling and Water Purification plant. Demonstrating flexibility and collaborative approach taken throughout the project, we completed this crucial phase in only 8 weeks.
Working in operational facilities, without affecting Business as Usual can be extremely challenging. BES are accustomed to working in these areas and bring a level of expertise that surpasses any others. Stakeholder liaison is key to ensure that the activities can be coordinated seamlessly with the ongoing operations. However, the prime objective is to segregate the areas to ensure that Operator safety, environmental conditions and cleanliness are maintained within the operational areas.
